Personal:

Yes, I am a Virginia Tech Hokie.  I pretty much live and die with VT football, so hide the pups indoors this fall if the season goes south.

I grew up in NJ, competed in middle school XC, was primarily a 400m sprinter (& XC) in h.s., and an 800/400m mid-distance runner at Virginia Tech.  Graduated VT with an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and currently am involved with the youth.

This blog is dedicated to my family and friends.  I have 2 (er 3, sorry Tambo!) wonderful sisters and 2 very supportive parents.  Kim is a Graphic Designer in D.C., and at one time rode and trained horses; Melissa is an English Lit teacher at an all-girls h.s. in NJ, in addition to being the XC/track coach.  She really likes comma splices.  Tammy is an Elementary Teacher and a crazy good soccer/basketball athlete, lives across the block from my parents, and is very funny.  All 3 have run at least one marathon.  I believe Tambo has run more marathons than I have.  I am ok with that.  I am very proud of them all.  Oh yeah, also 2 screwball huskies, Apollo and Zeus.

Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up.  It knows that it must outrun the slowest gazelle, or it will starve to death.

It doesn't matter if you are a lion or if you are a gazelle.  When the sun comes up, you'd better be running.

16 miles this evening w/ the 4 horsemen Logan, Dave, Clyde, and Aaron. 4 warm-up, 8 Tinman, 4 warm-down. My Tinman pace is about 6:25-6:30 right now, though today I did the 8 miles in 50:34 (6:19) - a little too fast and it felt a little strained. It rained frequently which made for a refreshing run and also made for soggy shoes and socks. The frogs sure seemed to enjoy it, venturing into the path. No casualties to report. Anyway by the end of the 16 miles I was pretty depleted - a decent workout, legs aren't sore or tight, just tired.

OK, what's a Tinman? If someone gets tired or rusty, the others have to stop and oil him?

I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore...

Okay on a serious note and kind of gross one :( I'm back into my long runs during the weekends and seem to be having problems with my longest toe on each foot. Shoes fit fine. Plenty of room up front and I really hate to switch them for many other reasons, but have now lost a toe nail (ewww gross). Not very attractive when wearing cute sandals, especially since there is nothing to paint. Ummmm, any advice/suggestions. I'm guessing you've encounter this problem before (I hope) Please big bro - the one who pointed me towards Mizunos...

You lost a nail?? No. Well doesn't that put a monkey in the wrench! Doesn't that put a sock in the drawer!

Mal, I'm not sure what to say. You mention that there is plenty of room up front (about a thumb-width from the tip of toes to tip of shoe?). Are the shoes sufficiently wide w/out feeling sloppy? How are the shoes otherwise for you? Personally I think losing nails is liberating. If I could I'd rip off more of my toenails. But that would mean pain.

Anyway good job on the long runs! Are you training for another race?

Yes yes I lost a nail :( My left long toe is not looking too hot these days and the right foot just has a pretty bruise same long toe. Thankfully the one that's gone is showing some new growth.

Here's the funny thing both shoes have plenty of room up front (about a thumb-width from the tip of toes to tip of shoe) and are really comfy other than this new problem. No rubs any where else. I'm already 1/2 shoe size bigger than my normal shoe and any bigger my feet will be swimming. Not sure if it's the way I'm running or what, but definitely odd. I have a 1/2 marathon 1st week in Sept. and not sure I want to change sneakers since everything else about them is great. Was hoping you would have some words of wisdom. Maybe the new nail will be stronger - yarg

We are meeting Saturday at the store at 5am to run the marathon course. I am planning on doing 20.
